Hager: 5,000 catalog pages created automatically
Hager maintained its product data in an in-house PIM system. For catalog production, the company chose Online Media Net (OMN) as its print publishing solution in 2013 – connected to its own PIM and highly automated under its own management. We worked together from 2013 to 2023.

“Thanks to the joint development with apollon we are able to start the automated data extraction on Friday evenings. On Monday, at the first office coffee, 5,000 pages are ready for fine-tuning.”
Reimund Wießner, Senior Manager Purchasing Marketing & Print Media at Hager Group
Initial situation
An in-house PIM, but catalogs made by hand.
Before OMN
- Catalogs created manually despite an existing PIM system
- Long process runtimes internally and in prepress
- Dependence on external service providers
Although Hager had its own in-house developed PIM system, its catalogs were created manually. This meant long process runtimes – internally and externally at prepress service providers.
To speed things up and reduce its dependence on external service providers, Hager decided to introduce a print publishing solution in 2013. The challenge: finding a suitable print engine that could be connected to its own PIM system. The choice was Online Media Net (OMN).
Project objectives
Project goals.
01
Print publishing in-house
Introduce a print publishing solution that lets Hager produce its main catalogs automatically and in-house.
02
A suitable print engine
Find a print engine that can be connected to Hager’s own PIM system.
03
Shorter runtimes
Improve performance by reducing internal and external process runtimes.
The solution
OMN as the print engine for Hager’s PIM.
OMN took over the product data from the Hager PIM, consolidated it and controlled catalog production – from building the chapter structure to the finished page.
Connection to the Hager PIM
Product groups and products were imported into OMN as a product library via XML. Hager’s seven-level product structure was fully represented.
Publications from templates
Catalogs, price lists and illustrated price lists were created in OMN CM from templates. A workflow automatically built and sorted the chapter structure from the linked products.
Automated page layout
A workflow generated the catalog pages as InDesign and PDF files. The finished files were bundled for download or delivered via FTP.
Flatplan
The OMN plug-in “Flatplan” showed the progress of catalog production at any time – including previews of individual chapters.
