“The Shopware basic system is not designed to create such a large number of sub-shops – it quickly reaches its limits when it comes to maintenance. Therefore, without further ado, a separate application was developed that can manage these sub-shops very efficiently and also ensures that all processes are properly documented.”
Christian Bodem, Teamleader Projects/Consulting at apollon
Initial situation
From ordering portal to marketplace
Before
- GenoStore originally designed for procuring card readers and payment transaction forms
- A very large number of sub-shops – standard Shopware reaches its limits in maintenance
- High requirements for documenting order, commission and fulfilment processes
DG Nexolution, formerly DG VERLAG, based in Wiesbaden, is a partner of the Volks- und Raiffeisenbanken. The company supports the banks with forms, marketing programmes and the digitalisation of central business processes, among other things.
This includes the GenoStore: an e-commerce platform through which banks offer card readers and payment transaction forms to their customers in their own shop. A new premium model was to bring the cooperative idea into the digital age: the banks’ business customers should be able to sell their goods online via the banking portal.
Project objectives
Three requirements
01
GenoStore as a premium model
Develop the existing GenoStore further and bring it into the digital age.
02
Marketplace function
The banks’ business customers can sell their goods online via the banking portal.
03
Complete documentation
Document business and fulfilment processes as well as commissions, invoices, cancellations, delivery notes and returns.
The solution
Shopware, extended with a marketplace and sub-shop management
The GenoStore was originally designed to digitalise the procurement of card readers and payment forms. Today, banks can use DG Nexolution’s solution to have an online shop created under their own company name and offer their product range online. To make this possible, apollon extended the Shopware platform in a targeted way.
Dedicated sub-shop management
Because Shopware is not designed for such a large number of sub-shops, apollon developed a separate application. It manages the sub-shops efficiently; users access it directly via the shop.
Marketplace with suppliers
Suppliers are created and maintained in the back end. Their orders appear in the order overview, reports are available in the front end, and automatic emails provide information on commission, revenue and delayed orders.
Showcasing merchants
A dedicated shopping-world element presents products as a marketplace slider per merchant.
Local pickup
Items can be marked for pickup and, if required, protected with a password.
GenoStore 2.0 in three sprints
Sub-shop management, suppliers and vouchers were implemented in three sprints in late 2020.
Migration to Shopware 6
In 2024, apollon migrated the GenoStore from Shopware 5 to Shopware 6 – including customer data, orders, reporting and gift vouchers. The SAP interface was tested in full before go-live.
Results
One platform for banks and their business customers
Marketplace for business customers
The banks’ business customers sell their goods online via the banking portal.
Branded shops for banks
Banks get online shops under their own company name and offer their range there.
Clean documentation
The dedicated sub-shop application ensures that all processes are properly documented; orders are passed on to SAP and an archive system.
Up-to-date technology
The GenoStore has been running on Shopware 6 since August 2024, followed by the update to Shopware 6.7 in 2025. New extensions add to the standard, such as reporting per sales channel, purchase limits per customer and minimum stock notifications.
Outlook
Ongoing support
apollon continues to support the GenoStore and keeps the platform up to date with Shopware updates.
